Sustainable & Ethical Beachwear

1. CASA RAKI

Sustainable swimwear brand Casa Raki was founded by fashion photographer Josefina Alazraki, who felt inspired to create an eco-friendly resortwear line. Designed in London and made in Portugal, Alazraki and her team thrive on finding new ways of making their designs more sustainable. Casa Raki uses the innovative fabric ECONYL® in its swimsuits, which is transformed from old recycled plastic into a regenerated nylon yarn. The environmentally conscious label also uses yarn made from castor beans, as well as plenty of organic linen.

2. THREE GRACES

Founded in 2015, London-based label Three Graces is the brainchild of designer Catherine Johnson, who wanted to create timeless resortwear with wardrobe longevity. The way clothing feels against the skin is crucial to the brand’s design philosophy, which is why Three Graces only uses natural fibres sourced from traceable European mills. To ensure its collections can be cherished for years to come, the label’s pieces are designed thoughtfully and manufactured to last in small Italian workshops; the relatively small production process also means waste is minimised.

3. HOUSE OF DHARMA

The inspiration for resortwear brand House of Dharma emerged from the sun-drenched beaches of Ibiza and was brought to life by sisters Kayleigh and Carrie Curneen. Inspired by the sisters’ shared love of travel, the brand supports the local community of Bali by employing local families to manufacture its pieces by hand; this uniquely intimate production process allows the brand to maintain close relationships with its workers. Where possible, the brand uses natural dyes and fabrics, as well as recyclable packaging.

4. BONDI BORN

Australian swimwear brand Bondi Born considers all pillars of conscious and sustainable design when it comes to producing collections. All fabrics are environmentally friendly; in particular, Sculpteur™ – the brand’s primary fabric – has a carbon footprint up to ten times lower than textiles made from recycled plastic. All Bondi Born factories are based in Sydney to ensure the company can maintain close working relationships with employees. The label also donates a portion of all sales made on its website through i=Change, a service that allows customers to choose their charity of choice at checkout.

5. WALD BERLIN

The fun and quirky accessories label on everyone’s lips, WALD Berlin was founded by Dana Roski and Joyce Binneboese in 2018. The brand is best known for its use of shells but is particularly careful about where the materials are sourced from; WALD Berlin works closely with German biologists to ensure any shells or coral used are not a protected species. All jewellery is then handmade in the designers’ native Germany by a women’s collective, which helps to employ women who would otherwise be out of work.
